WP1 Analysis and survey report on existing courses in current engineering curricula

A detailed study on existing courses in relevant engineering programs at BTI, FPI, NMI, TARI, TPU and other technical Uzbek universities is carried out. The study will also include the courses given at the EU partner institutions (KTH, JKU, KUL). This study will be compiled based on inputs of all partners and available to all partners.

WP2 Intensive Training courses for Uzbek teachers

CAPACITY BUILDING. Intensive Training courses for Uzbek teachers are planned. The training courses will be carried out in different ways. They will attend some advanced Mechatronics courses regularly given at EU partner universities. This activity will serve for two purposes, one of which will increase their knowledge on Mechatronics and another will give them some experience about how short courses can be arranged for engineers. They will also follow partially some undergraduate and postgraduate courses given at EU partners. By this way Uzbek partners will gain good experience on active teaching processes of their EU peers that will enable them to gain new teaching methodologies. After laboratories are established and courses are ready at 5 Uzbek partner universities; EU partners/teachers will go to Uzbekistan to guide Uzbek teachers with courses and lab experiments and to give some guest lectures.

WP3 Development of Curricula

Establishing Mechatronics and Embedded Systems laboratory at BTI, FPI, NMI, TARI, TPU. This lab will serve not only for graduate students but also for post graduate students, researchers and teachers/professors. The EU partners will help Uzbek teachers to define necessary lab hardware devices and relevant software tools, determine the specifications and choose the best instruments that fit foreseen course experiments and lab exercises before purchase. The equipment will be chosen so that they can be used for undergraduate, postgraduate, and retraining courses. Also, a few computers will be procured, installed and connected to the data acquisition systems, so that each student can collect and post-process collected data. Other facilities will be included to help teaching processes; e.g. overhead projectors and computer networks.

WP4 Establishing Mechatronics laboratory at BTI, NMI, FPI, TARI, TPU

Development of 8 MSc degree courses (90 ECTS) and MSc thesis requirements, and 3 advanced PhD courses (18 ECTS) in Mechatronics and Embedded systems. All mandatory courses in MSc Mechatronics specialization are split in 3 groups: Basics courses (30 ECTS), More Advanced and Applied courses (30 ECTS), Elective courses (30 ECTS).

Curriculum development will be based on Bologna methodology principles even though ECTS are not implemented in Uzbekistan. The development of the curricula will be based on knowledge transfer from EU partners, thus enabling development of European up-to-date curricula, in accordance with all current standards. The curriculum development will be based on the following steps:
a) detailed needs assessment and planning of curricula and their placement for each university and its discussion among all the partners (at the kickoff) and appointment of 2 Academic Groups (AG). AG #1 will be responsible for 8 MSc courses development & MSc thesis requirements; AG #2 will be responsible for  development of 3 PhD courses;
b) knowledge transfer form EU (sharing and adapting curricula from EU partners, discussions, peer reviews, quality control, support to develop lecture books, guest lectures, support to development processes), where all EU partners are involved;
c) Monitoring / evaluation will be continuous part of this activity through a series of Quality Assurance measures and peer reviews.
While developing new curricula industry needs and challenges of today will be studied carefully with the help of the industry partners of the project, viz. UZAVTO, NMP, NPP, ETD, UZSUNGWOO, GM-PT Uz, which will participate AG # 1, AG#2.


WP5 Recognition, accreditation and launch of new master program in Mechatronics

SUSTAINABILITY. Recognition and accreditation of 8 newly developed MSc courses and 3 PhD courses. The developed new MSc program will be recognized by academic councils of BTI, FPI, NMI, TARI, TPU first and then will be included in a classificatory list of national graduate programs after accreditation by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan. In total 60 undergraduate students studying in their fourth year with sufficient English language skills and with good performance in core engineering courses from 5 Uzbek partner universities are selected in the 2nd year of the project in order to train them in intensive English language and some basic courses necessary for Mechatronics. After half a year top 30 students out of 60 will be admitted to the program studies in an open competition based on results of the 3rd year of the project. In the 2nd semester, best performing 5 Uzbek students are selected to participate in 2 courses and to do a part of their project works for up to 1 month at EU partner institutions under supervision of their EU professors and similarly, 3 EU students will be given the opportunity to do at least part of their thesis work at Uzbek partners. The student projects will be designed to simulate practical problems, and will include laboratory or field measurements. There will be a mutual recognition of the periods spent at different partner universities. These exchange students will work together with their peers at a host university. This activity will enhance and empower abilities of those students to communicate with co-workers from different cultures. That will also serve for cultural exchange across nations.


WP6 Training courses for engineers from 6 industry partners

TRAINING courses for ENGINEERS from different industries at the established labs according to the current industry needs will be performed. This will promote the cooperation between the Uzbek Industries and universities. The main objective of the project is to supply industries with qualified engineers. This also will be achieved by teaching new courses for those engineers, currently working in different enterprises; in this way, industry engineers will be also able to benefit from this project. Several intensive courses will be organized for them. Course contents will cover the basics which they should have taken at the university level, field measurements, signal processing and experimental data analysis how to specify and select appropriate instruments, how to write reports, and so forth. The courses will be given by Uzbek teachers and invited EU teachers.
KTH, JKU, KUL have a good experience with undertaking commercial consultancy work and contract research in Mechatronics for Industry, Businesses, Government Departments and Agencies, Local Authorities, other organizations and individuals. The Uzbek universities will hold meetings with those who are responsible for this unit and invite them to give seminars in Uzbekistan. The purpose of the meetings and seminars is to advice universities in Uzbekistan on how to direct their teaching and research activities towards labor market driven needs. BTI, FPI, NMI, TARI, TPU will try to take the opportunity of this project to build effective ties between the partner universities and employers – corresponding industries. In addition, several visits will be organized to the project's industry partners and other relevant enterprises.


WP7 Quality Control

QUALITY CONTROL. Quality control group (QCG) of academic staffs from partner institutions to monitor quality of teaching and content of the course materials will be created. Besides, the following actions are taken in a planned manner: 1. QCG will assess student performance on new courses via assessing their gained skills and lab projects. 2. Student and teacher feedback via specially designed questionnaires will be collected; 3. Interviews with industry representatives will be carried out; 4. Quality control via project reports; 5. Invited external evaluators (inter-project coaching) will evaluate the project developed curricula;  6. Industry engineers taken part in trainings will provide feedback on quality of training courses, lab works and their gained skills. 7. Student projects obtained from industries will be assessed by industry engineers; 8. Before training courses and after completion of training courses, PhD students and teachers will take feedback tests.

WP9 Management

Project Management. The project is coordinated by the grant-holder institution concerning all financial issues. Overall management of the project is performed by the project steering committee, created as a board with one representative from each partner institution. The project is managed in a democratic way with open discussions and communications via skype, email, drop-box, google-file share,and face-to-face coordination meetings twice a year. All information of project's development activities performed by every partner will be published on the project website; minutes and key agreed points from every coordination meeting will be shared across partners. The partners will create 4 separate plans in project management during the kick-off meeting: 1) Consolidated financial plan; 2) Steering committee plan; 3) Communication plan; 4) Project monitoring plan.
